Video / Tonga volcano erupts 500 times more powerful than Hiroshima atomic bomb
NASA has stated that the eruption of the volcano in Tonga is 500 times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima by the US, at the end of World War II, after calculations made by scientists.
Below are images captured by the catastrophic explosion satellites.
James Garvin, chief scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, told NPR radio that "the number we have achieved is about 10 megatons - 10 million tonnes, the equivalent of TNT".
The eruption was heard as far as Alaska and according to Michael Poland, of the U.S. Geological Survey, may be the strongest eruption on earth since 1883, when the Krakatoa volcano erupted in Indonesia.
