A magnitude 5.9 earthquake has shaken southeastern Australia, damaging buildings in the city of Melbourne. The quake struck at around 9:15 a.m. local time, with its epicenter in Mansfield, not far from the Victorian state capital.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison stated that fortunately no human injuries were reported, other than significant property damage.
Strong earthquake tremors were felt in neighboring South Australia and New South Wales. The quake was followed by two earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 and 3.1 on the Richter scale.
The 5.9 magnitude earthquake is the strongest to hit Australia in recent years. Earthquakes in Australia are unusual, and their activation could be a disturbing event, said Prime Minister Morrison.
