The first country in the EU to officially introduce the 4-day work week

Workers in Belgium are now entitled to work 4 days a week - but this does not mean they will work fewer hours.

The regulation, which was drawn up by the Belgian government in February this year, came into force on Monday, amid continued positive evidence in several countries and organisations.

But unlike most pilots where employees are paid the same amount for working fewer hours, Belgian employees using the four-day week option will have to work the same amount of hours during the week.

All employees, regardless of whether they work in the public or private sector, will have the choice of working nine and a half hours a day for four days, or eight hours a day for five days.

This makes Belgium the first country in the European Union – and only the third in the world, after Iceland and New Zealand – to officially introduce the four-day working week as an option for its employees.
