Fee and reservation to enter Venice. What you need to know

Venice authorities have announced that from January 16, 2023, visitors will have to book and pay a fee to enter the historic city.

The ticketing system, which the city says is the first of its kind in the world, hopes to ease overcrowding problems.

Who should book a ticket to visit Venice?

Travelers planning to visit the historic city of Venice will need to register their visit.

Visitors arriving by public and private transport must book in advance.

Those visiting the surrounding islands such as Burano and Murano will also need to register and pay.

Some day trippers are exempt from paying the entrance fee, although they will still need to book. This includes residents of the Veneto region, students and those visiting family members in the city.

The local council has emphasized that there will be no limit on the number of visitors, but only an increase in the entrance fee if a certain number of visitors is reached on a given day.

How can visitors book tickets to Venice?

A multilingual online booking system will be available in the fall for visitors to pre-book their trip to Venice.

After booking, visitors will receive a QR code that acts as their ticket and must be shown to the ticket inspectors.

For those arriving by public transport, it may be possible to purchase the entry pass at the same time as the travel ticket.

If this service is not available, public transport operators will make announcements to passengers reminding them to book.

How much will visitors have to pay to visit Venice?

The cost of tickets will vary from 3 to 10 euros depending on the season.

In particularly busy periods, visitors will be asked to pay higher amounts. This will happen when the number of visitors booking to arrive in the city exceeds a certain threshold, which has not yet been made public.
