The Taliban have arrested a prominent university professor and an outspoken critic of successive Afghan governments, including the new Taliban regime.

Professor Faizuallah Jalal

Zabihullah Mujahid said in a Twitter post that Professor Faizuallah Jalal had been arrested by Taliban intelligence. The professor is accused of "meaningless remarks on social media, which were provoking people against the government and playing with human dignity."

The Taliban took control of Afghanistan last August before the withdrawal of US troops on August 31 after nearly 20 years of war.

In a Twitter post, Xhalal's daughter, Hasina Jalal, demanded the release of her father.

"While confirming the disturbing news, I demand the immediate release of my father, Professor Faizuallah Jalal," she wrote.

Afghanistan is facing a humanitarian crisis of epic proportions and the United Nations warns that 90% of the country's 38 million people are in dire need. The arrest of a prominent human rights activist was sure to complicate humanitarian aid efforts. The move also reinforced fears that the Taliban were imposing the same harsh and repressive rule as the last heir to power before being ousted by a US-led coalition.

TOLO TV, Afghanistan's largest station, in which Faizuallah Jalal was a frequent commentator, wrote on Twitter that Jalal had been arrested "allegedly on charges against government departments".

There is no official response from the government to questions about Xhalal's arrest.
