Sweden's lenient approach to the coronavirus pandemic has helped spread the infection to other countries, according to a new study.

The study, published by the scientific journal Eurosurveillance, was conducted by researchers at Uppsala University in Sweden, the Institute of Public Health in Norway and the University of Sydney in Australia.

"Sweden was a net exporter of coronavirus to our Nordic neighbors in the first year of the pandemic," John Pettersson of Uppsala University told Swedish television station STV.

Sweden has taken few measures to prevent the spread of the virus in the early stages of the pandemic, unlike other Scandinavian countries.

As a result, the number of infected has been high, which immediately encouraged mutation of the virus, according to the researchers.

The study is based on the analysis of 71,000 samples, enabling researchers to analyze the origin of the spread of the virus from the Nordic region.

The chain of infections is said to have originated in Sweden, before passing to other countries.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, Sweden has registered over 15,000 victims of the coronavirus.

For comparison, Denmark has registered about 2,700 victims, Norway about 900, while Finland about 1,200.

Each of these countries has just over half the population of Sweden.
