According to the WHO, travel restrictions due to the pandemic are no longer
International travel bans should be eased or lifted altogether, according to the latest recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO has issued a statement from the most recent Emergency Committee meeting this week - its tenth since the pandemic began - discussing the effectiveness of restricted travel and whether it should be lifted.

" Travel restrictions and prohibitions " are not effective in stopping international proliferation (as clearly shown by Omicron's experience) , "the statement said.

As a result, the new advice is to "lift or ease international travel bans as they do not add value and continue to contribute to the economic and social stress" of some countries.

Instead of travel bans, there are said to be "travel measures" to control the spread of the virus.

"Measures such as camouflage, testing, isolation / quarantine and vaccination should be based on risk assessments and countries should avoid placing financial burdens on international travelers," the WHO wrote.

The organization has advocated a more cautious approach throughout the pandemic, speaking out against travel bans in South Africa when the Omicron variant was first discovered and calling for "deep inequality" in global vaccine access to be addressed.
