Sicily and mainland Italy may soon be connected by a bridge

Italy has long toyed with the idea of ??building a bridge between the island of Sicily and the mainland.

The hugely ambitious engineering project was in the preliminary stages for decades before it was closed in 2013.

Now, Italy's new right-wing government has said it wants to revive the plans.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced that she will ask the EU to finance the multi-billion euro proposal.

Matteo Salvini, Italy's infrastructure minister, said he would discuss the project in Brussels on December 5.

He added that construction will start in two years and will take about five years to complete.

"Ferry transport, in addition to pollution and wasted time, costs people more in a year than it would cost to build a bridge," says Salvini.
