How the serious incident happened in France where four children were attacked with a knife in the playground
Four young children, under the age of 3, were hospitalized after a brutal stabbing in Annecy, France on Thursday. This event caused a wave of panic in the alpine town.
Two adults were also injured.
After the operations, the children are in a stable condition.
Eyewitnesses described how the aggressor entered a playground to attack children.
"He entered the square, started screaming and then went towards the toys repeatedly stabbing the little ones," an eyewitness told CNN.
"Mothers were crying, everyone was running," another eyewitness told Reuters.
A Syrian asylum seeker has been arrested on suspicion of carrying out the attack. The suspect was not under the influence of alcohol or other substances at the time of the attack and had no apparent terrorist motive.
He is 31 years old.
The suspect had legally applied for asylum late last year and described himself as a "Christian from Syria" in his application.
He had been living in Sweden for 10 years and had applied for asylum status in France, but his request was rejected.
French President Emmanuel Macron said "the nation is shocked" after the attack.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the attack was "a truly cowardly act".
