Carnival in Rio de Janeiro postponed to late April due to Omicron spread

The carnival celebrations in Rio de Janeiro, which were scheduled to take place on the last weekend of February, have been postponed due to the increase in coronavirus cases in Brazil.

The South American state has seen an increase in Covid-19 cases since the beginning of the year due to the Omicron variant, prompting officials to postpone carnival parades to April 21st.

"The decision was made respecting the current situation of the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil and the need to save lives and promote vaccination throughout the country," said in a statement issued by the cities of Rio and Sao Paulo.

Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes and his Sao Paulo counterpart Ricardo Nunes held a video conference with their respective health secretaries and the samba school league of each city holding the parade on Friday.

In this video-call it was said that the holidays will not be done as before the pandemic, but without explaining what changes they may have.
