State of the year! Mario Draghi receives the Big Names Award

The former Italian Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, has been honored with the "statesman of the year" award from the UN. The award was presented to him by the former US Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, 99 years old.

During his speech, Draghi said: I am touched by the words of Dr. Kissinger. And from the fact that he found time to come here on this occasion. For me it is a gift, a great gift. Our friendship began thirty years ago, on a plane, and has grown over the years, even if we haven't seen each other. Recently, we have had the opportunity to have a particularly deep conversation about what is happening after the start of the war, what needs to be done now, later and how to deal with autocracies. Russia's invasion of Ukraine threatens to usher in a new era of polarization, unprecedented since the Cold War. That is why it is important how we deal with autocracies, an aspect that will determine our ability to shape the common future for many years to come.

The award was previously received by Mikhail Gorbachev, Angela Merkel and Shinzo Abe.
