US calls on Bulgaria: You have 40 days to lift veto on Skopje penalizing Tirana

The United States has called on Bulgaria to resolve its veto on membership talks with Skopje by the end of the year, which also penalizes Tirana. Two members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, William Keating and Claudia Tenny from the Republicans, sent a letter to the Bulgarian Ambassador to Washington, Tihomir Stoychev, stating:

"Bulgaria must finally resolve the dispute with Northern Macedonia in order for Skopje to start negotiations for membership in the European Union by the end of the year."

Full letter:

Ambassador Stojchev, the continuing slowdown in the progress of Northern Macedonia and Albania towards the European Union, has called into question the commitments of Western leaders, opening the door to anti-European political influence in the region, particularly from China and Russia. We believe that the eventual membership of Northern Macedonia and Albania is essential for lasting peace and stability in the Balkan region and for the entire transatlantic community.

That is why we are writing to you today to call on you to reach a final settlement to this bilateral dispute, which will allow Albania and Northern Macedonia to begin their EU membership negotiations before the end of the year. year.

We hope that you will put aside your differences and support the full political integration of Northern Macedonia and Albania in the European Union, ”the letter concludes.
