The US Senate approves the bill to ban TikTok

The US Senate has passed a bill that would ban TikTok in the United States if its owner - Chinese firm ByteDance - does not sell it within a year.

Driven by growing concerns among US lawmakers that China could access Americans' data, or spy on them through the app, the bill was approved by the US House of Representatives on Saturday and US President Joe Biden said he will sign it into law on Wednesday.

"For too many years we have allowed the Chinese Communist Party to have control over one of the most popular apps in America," said Rep. Marco Rubio of the Intelligence Committee.

“The new law will require the Chinese owner to sell the app. This is a good decision for America," he added.
