Russia threatens Finland: If you join NATO, we will retaliate
The Russian Foreign Ministry has openly threatened Finland with retaliation if the country joins NATO.
"The statement by Finnish President S. Niinistö and Finnish Prime Minister S. Marin, who spoke today in favor of Finland's membership in NATO, is a radical change in the country's foreign policy. Helsinki must be aware of the responsibility and consequences of such a move. Finland's possible membership in NATO would cause serious damage to Russian-Finnish bilateral relations, which are maintaining stability and security in the Northern European region. Russia will be forced to take retaliatory steps, both of a military-technical nature and of another nature, in order to stop the threats to its national security that arise in this direction. NATO membership will also be a direct violation of Finland's international legal obligations,
Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Finland's membership in the military alliance posed a threat to Russia.
