Rihanna takes the top title from her hometown, is declared the national heroine

Pop star Rihanna has been honored by Prime Minister Mia Mottley at an event marking Barbados' new status as a republic.

The Barbadian artist and businesswoman, also known by her full name Robyn Rihanna Fenty, had previously been appointed national ambassador in 2018.

Barbados has officially removed Queen Elizabeth II from the post of head of state and has become the youngest republic in the world after Dame Sandra Mason was sworn in as president.

During the event, which coincided with the 55th anniversary of the country's independence, Prince Charles acknowledged the "terrible cruelty of slavery" that the Caribbean island suffered.

Rihanna was declared the national heroine at the event, while the new president told her to "continue to shine like a diamond and bring honor to her nation."
