Four sailors in Sri Lanka die after drinking the liquid from the bottles they found at sea
Four fishermen have died in Sri Lanka and two others are in serious condition after consuming an unknown liquid from bottles they found while at sea, according to local media reports.
The sailors were reportedly on a fishing trip when they picked up the bottles about 320 nautical miles from Tangalle, a town on the island's south coast.
The Sri Lankan Navy told reporters that the fishermen drank from the bottles thinking they contained alcohol. Director General of Sri Lanka's Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Susantha Kahawatte, told several media that the navy was trying to bring them back to shore.
She said the navy was providing medical attention to the men aboard the fishing vessel, named the Devon, out of concern there was not enough time to return them to land for treatment.
Kahawatta told national news station Ada Derana that the fishermen had distributed some of the bottles to other teams operating in the area.
Meanwhile, efforts are being made to notify these crews.
