After Buffalo, another attack causes casualties at a church in California

At least one person has been killed and four others seriously injured after a shooting Sunday night at a church in Laguna Woods, California.

"All of those injured in the attack are adults and have been taken to hospital," the Orange County Sheriff's Office said in a Twitter post. "One person died at the scene," the statement said.

The shooting took place at the Presbyterian Church in Geneva during a reception to honor a former pastor.

Police are detaining a suspect. He is an Asian man in his 60s who does not live in that area.

Investigators are working to determine if he had any connection to the church or what was the motive for the crime.

They have not yet reached a result.

The aggressor was stopped at the scene after a group of people in the church managed to tie his legs with an extension cord and take the two pistols he was carrying.

"That group of church visitors displayed what we believe is extraordinary heroism in intervening to stop it," said the investigator.

The injured in the shooting included four men aged 66, 75, 82 and 92, and a woman aged 86.

About 30-40 people were present at the church.
