The last time AJ Martinez was at school was May 24, when he was shot in the leg while hiding under his backpack when a gunman killed his two teachers and 19 classmates at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas.

He saw the assailant enter the classroom and heard him say: 'Good night' to the teacher, before unleashing a flurry of shots. The AJ also listened to officers in the hallways during the 77 minutes it took from the time the gunman entered the small-town school to the time he was killed.

AJ left school that day with someone else's blood on his face, likely from lying on the floor with the dead and wounded. Since then, he has been sad, angry and scared. And he's been doing a lot of physical therapy.

But when the new school year started yesterday Tuesday, AJ, now 10, returned with a smile on his face.

"I slept well," he told CNN, wearing a maroon T-shirt with pictures of his slain teachers, Eva Mireles and Irma Garcia, and 19 classmates who lost their lives. On it was written: "My teachers and classmates, forever."

Robb Elementary has been closed and its students have been dispersed to other institutions and virtual schools.

'I'm nervous because I'm not used to this school,' AJ said as she entered another school in town.
