A massive rock falls on a cruise ship in Brazil, at least 7 dead and 3 missing
At least seven people were left dead and three missing after a massive rock fell on several tourist boats in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais yesterday.
Rescue efforts were halted late Saturday due to a "lack of natural light" on Lake Furnas in the Capitólio. They resumed today at 5am, said Pedro Aihara, spokesman for the Minas Gerais Fire Department.
Rescue efforts will continue at least until Monday, Aihara said, while Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said Marina has assigned a team of relief forces to join the search and rescue efforts.
The state of Minas Gerais, a landlocked area in southeastern Brazil, has experienced heavy rainfall recently.
According to Romeu Zema, governor of Minas Gerais, heavy rains caused rock to fall on Lake Furnas.
"I show solidarity with families in this difficult time," Zema wrote on Twitter. "We will continue to act to provide the necessary protection and support."
A video posted on social media showed tourists in other boats on Lake Furnas shouting "get out of there" just before the rock fell.
