An abandoned baby in temperatures down to -20C in Siberia was found by five teenagers in an egg box on a remote street near the village of Sosnovka, outside Novosibirsk on Friday.

The baby was rushed to hospital by one of the teen's parents, who said he was in good condition.

Police are searching for the mother and have opened a criminal investigation into the attempted murder of a minor.

Speaking to the Russian newspaper NGS, the father of one of the teenagers, Dimitry Litvinov, said the five friends had gone out for a walk on Orthodox Christmas day.

"It was dark, they were making light with their phones and saw a box. They approached and saw what was inside," said Mr. Litvinov.

Inside was a little girl wrapped in a thin blanket and a bottle, he added.

He and his wife Anna were called to the scene by their son Renat. They drove the baby to a city hospital, but feared the baby, who is believed to be about three days old when it was found, might have frozen and would not survive.

Upon arrival at the hospital, a doctor quickly examined the baby and warmed him by gently rubbing his arms and legs, according to a statement from the regional health ministry.

The girl turned pink, was found to be healthy and was then transferred to a children’s hospital where she is now receiving medical care.

Speaking to NGS, Ms Litvinova said she and many of the hospital staff had cried when they heard the baby was in good health.

The couple, who already have three sons, want to adopt the baby, but must first wait to find out if relatives of the child can be found.

According to foreign media if relatives are not found, new parents must gather documents and attend special courses before being allowed to adopt.
