What happened to my data? Everything you need to know about the social media blackout yesterday and why it took so many hours to fix
Why did the pages crash in the first place?
People did not have access to Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. It took about 6 hours for them to be able to talk to friends and family on social media. Facebook issued a statement confirming that the cause of the outage was a change in the configuration of the base routers, which coordinate network traffic between the company's data centers, which had a cascading effect, stopping all services and applications that are connected me Facebook.
Cloudflare - which had its latest internet outage problems has given a more detailed explanation of what happened. It includes two things that solve how the internet and the distribution system work - this is the Domain Name System (DNS) and the Border Gate Protocol (BGP).
The Internet has many, many networks. So that means you have to keep things in order, you need something like BGP which tells you where to go broadcasting. DNS is essentially the address system for each web site's location - its IP address - while BGP is the guide that finds the most efficient way to reach that IP address.
Cloudflare says BGP could not find a way to do the broadcast on Facebook and everything related to Facebook. This means that people who tried to access Facebook could not find a way to open the services.
Virtually all Facebook services were affected, including internal systems. Facebook employees themselves, even ITs, did not have the opportunity to open their internal communication platforms or enter offices.
Why did it take so long to adjust?
Facebook's internal systems were run from the same site, so it was difficult for employees to diagnose and resolve the issue. Facebook staff were unable to access their communications platform, Workplace, and were unable to access their office either due to a security switch system that was also disrupted.
How was it finally fixed?
Facebook has so far not gone into much detail about what went wrong and how it was fixed, but there were numerous reports that the social media giant sent a technical team to its servers in California to manually reset the servers where it was specifically born problems.
Can this type of interruption be avoided in the future?
This is quite unusual, but not something that can be completely avoided. However, the shutdown of Facebook, along with others including the shutdown of Cloudflare in 2020, and that in June, indicate problems with having a single point of failure for a large number of online services where people and businesses rely.
People rely on Facebook not only to connect with friends and family, but businesses use it for other services, including online sales websites. In some countries, it is the dominant means of communication through services like WhatsApp. The fact that an interruption can have such a profound impact on billions of people for a few hours should serve as a break and to think about how such situations can be avoided in the future.
Was my data compromised?
How much did this blackout cost?
There is no accurate cost estimate of how much it has cost Facebook-based businesses. But Facebook's share price fell immediately by 4.9%, causing the personal fortune of founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg to drop $ 6 billion, according to Bloomberg.
