Lola, the oldest person in the world, dies

Franciska Susano, also known as Lola who is thought to be the oldest person in the world and the last living woman born in the 1800s, died Monday at the age of 124.

Lola's death was confirmed by state officials in her native province of Kabankalan, Negros Occidental.

"It is with sadness in our hearts when we received the news that our girlfriend Lola Francisca Susano passed away early this Monday evening," the state government posted on their official Facebook account.

Medical experts have not yet determined the cause of Susano's death, but it is suspected to be due to Covid.

Born in September 1897 - a year before Spain ceded control of the Philippines to the United States - Susano is said to have been the last surviving person in the world to be born in the 19th century.
