A medieval tower in the Italian city of Bologna has been closed due to fears it could collapse.
Authorities have begun building a 5-meter-high fence around the 12th-century Garisenda tower to contain debris in case it falls. The 47-metre tower leans at an angle of four degrees and monitoring has revealed that it has moved enough to pose a threat to residents who may frequent the area.
The city council said the situation is "extremely critical. As a result, they have launched a civil defense plan to preserve the tower and said the work starting now "is the first stage to make it safe".
The city estimates that the fence alone will cost 4.3 million euros.
