The crisis in Afghanistan is forcing the Dutch minister to resign

Dutch Foreign Minister Sigrid Kaag resigned yesterday. Kaag took responsibility for the crisis in Afghanistan.

Lawmakers approved a motion in parliament yesterday with 78 votes in favor, criticizing the government for failing to evacuate some Afghans and for the Taliban's lack of control.

Kaag's resignation comes a day after Britain's Dominic Raab stepped down as foreign minister over how he handled the situation in Afghanistan.

Kaag said she will remain as leader of the center-left D66 party, which is in coalition talks with Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

Rutte said her resignation was a huge loss for the cabinet.

The Netherlands evacuated more than 1,500 people, Dutch nationals and skilled Afghans, in the last chaotic days before the US withdrew from Afghanistan. But many more Afghans were left there, including 22 translators, despite calls from lawmakers to evacuate them months ago.
