WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has returned home to Australia after being released from prison in London.

Cheers erupted from supporters gathered at Canberra airport as Assange stepped off the plane.

His wife Stella welcomed him with a smile on her face. Assange pulled her into a hug.

For the past 14 years, Assange has been in a legal battle with US officials, who have accused him of leaking classified documents that they say put lives at risk.

The 52-year-old did not attend the press conference in Canberra, instead letting his lawyer and wife speak on his behalf.

"Julian wanted me to sincerely thank everyone. He wanted to be here. But you have to understand what he's been through. He needs time, he needs to recover and this is a process," she told a news conference to the press after her husband's arrival.
