Italy declares surrogacy carried out abroad illegal

The Italian Senate has made it illegal for couples to go abroad to have a child through surrogacy. The decision was met with reservations by activists, who say it targets same-sex partners.

Earlier this year, Meloni called surrogacy an "inhumane" practice that treated children like supermarket products.

Scores of activists gathered outside the Senate to express their anger at the law, saying the government is attacking the LGBT community.
