An Antonov cargo plane of a Ukrainian airline loaded with ammunition crashed on Saturday evening near the town of Kavalla in northern Greece. Greek media say that 8 people may have died on board the plane.

The plane departed from Nis, Serbia to Amman, Jordan. It took off at around 18:36 UTC and was crossing the Aegean Sea when it turned back towards Greece at 19:29 and just a few hours later it crashed in a field near Kavala.

The plane issued a distress signal and wanted to make an emergency landing in Kavala after one of its engines failed and caught fire, but it was lost from radar soon after and crashed in a field. Fortunately, the life of no resident of the area was endangered.

The air in the area has become toxic, with the local authorities recommending the residents of the area to wear masks and stay indoors, without opening doors and windows.

It is reported that an unknown white substance was also found at the scene.
