German court: coercive measures during the pandemic did not violate

The German Constitutional Court has ruled that imposing measures to curb the pandemic did not violate constitutional rights. The court stated that indeed much was violated on basic human rights during the pandemic, but the measures were in accordance with the basic law, reports Deutsche Welle.

The restraining measures served entirely to protect life and health as well as preserve the operating capacity of the health system, Constitutional Court judges in Karlsruhe said on Tuesday.

The Constitutional Court makes it clear that even in the decision to close schools, the right of children and young people to school education was faced with "extremely important issues of the common good". The ban on attendance was "in accordance with the constitution, both formally and materially," the judges said.

Many German citizens saw Covid's restraining measures as an impermissible interference with the constitutional rights of the citizen. Even the liberal party, the FDP, which is likely a member of the new government, had filed a lawsuit in the Constitutional Court against the "emergency curfew."
