Germany is making the move easier for foreign workers this summer

If you've been thinking about moving to Germany, this new work permit could be for you.

Germany is looking for skilled workers and has introduced a new way for foreign nationals to settle in the country.

Called the "Opportunity Card", it allows non-EU nationals to move to Germany for a year to look for a job.

Germany needs about 400,000 new skilled workers a year to cover the shortage, especially in the fields of engineering, IT and healthcare.

The Opportunity Card acts as a temporary visa or work permit, allowing non-EU citizens to live in the country for up to one year.

During this period, cardholders are allowed to undertake part-time work amounting to no more than 20 hours per week or undertake trial work experiences lasting two weeks.

The goal is to make it easier for qualified employees to find suitable jobs and for companies that need employees.

Who is eligible for Germany's Opportunity Card?

If you wish to apply for an Opportunity Card you must have completed at least two years of vocational training or have a university degree from your home country relevant to your desired role.

Applicants must also know German or English.

Those interested must prove that they have the funds or salary from a part-time work contract to cover their stay in Germany for a year - just over €12,000.
