Photos have revealed NASA astronaut Sunita Williams' shocking weight loss as she and her crewmate remain stranded on the International Space Station (ISS).

Williams, 59, and Barry Wilmore, 61, are staying at the ISS for five months after Boeing's damaged Starliner spacecraft was deemed unsafe to return them to Earth.

The most recent images show a major weakness of Williams.

Publicly, NASA has said that Williams is in 'good health' and that she has undergone 'routine medical evaluations'.

Long-duration space missions take a toll on the health of astronauts, especially women, leading to weight loss, muscle wasting, bone damage, heart and vision problems, and kidney stones.

Female astronauts lose more weight than male astronauts during spaceflight.

"He has lost a lot of weight and is skin and bones. So it's a priority to help him stabilize his weight loss and hopefully get it back," the NASA source told the New York Post.

The concern is that she will stay there for a few more months.
