Israeli airstrikes in Gaza kill 9 people, including a 5-year-old girl
The Israeli military launched deadly airstrikes in Gaza on Friday as tensions continue to rise between Israel and Palestinian militant groups.
The Palestinian health ministry said at least nine people were killed, including a five-year-old girl, and 55 others were injured. In a statement, the Israeli military said the military operation targeted Islamic Jihad, the smaller of the two main militant groups in Gaza.
Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza, has condemned Israel's action.
"The Israeli enemy, which started the escalation against Gaza and committed a new crime, must pay the price and bear full responsibility for it," said spokesman Fawzi Barhoum.
