The two NOs that did not give American women the unrestricted right to abortion

The two NOs that did not give American women the unrestricted right to abortion

With 51 votes against and 49 in favor, the US Senate voted against advancing the Women's Health Protection Act.

What does this act mean?

This bill would have put an end to some strict state laws against abortion. For example, some states, including Texas and most recently Oklahoma, ban abortion after hearing fetal heartbeats. Beatings are generally heard in the sixth week of pregnancy and most mothers detect pregnancy exactly in this week.

Where does the problem currently lie?

The limited time they have to evaluate their decision and find the appropriate clinic and conditions to perform the abortion procedure, in cases where the pregnancy is unplanned.

The 1973 Roe v. Wade Act

The 1973 law gives women the right to have abortions without restrictions, but different states have the right to make specific decisions. Yesterday's Senate vote aimed to turn the abortion issue into a federal law. This would limit states from setting limits. So the law would be unified for the whole of the United States of America. It would thus ban states that both Texas and Oklahoma have imposed restrictions on pregnancy periods.

Democrats against Republicans

The issue of abortion is one of the most delicate and heated topics of the Democrat-Republican clash. Democrats support abortion rights, Republicans oppose it. West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin, however, sided with the Republicans with his vote against. Republican senators Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska issued a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to abortion rights but promoting more restrictive legislation. The support of at least 60 senators would be necessary for the bill to pass.

Information Leak

The whole issue came back to light after information leaked to the press that the US Supreme Court could decide to overturn the decision in the "Roe vs. Wade" case, which legalized abortion in the United States about 50 years ago.

Wave of protests

This information leak sparked numerous protests in the United States. With banners in their hands, for several weeks now, various women and activists have been demanding that they have the right to decide on their own body.
