Bhutan will reopen to international tourists from September after two years, officials said on June 30.
The country of scenic natural beauty and ancient Buddhist culture, located between China and India, took early drastic steps and banned tourism, in March 2020 when the first case of COVID-19 was detected there.
The constitutional monarchy of fewer than 800,000 people has reported fewer than 60,000 infections and just 21 deaths, but its $3 billion economy has shrunk in the past two years, pushing more people into poverty.
However, tourists will be charged a fee of $200 per night, up from the $65 it has been for three decades. Officials said the new fee would compensate for pollution caused by tourists.
