Benedict changes statement, admits he attended meeting to discuss abusive

Former Pope Benedict XVI has admitted to attending a meeting in 1980 to discuss a priest who abused children, dismissing his earlier denial which he considered "a mistake in editing the statement of the his ".

An independent investigation into abuse by the Catholic clergy in the Archdiocese of Munich, where Benedict was archbishop from 1977 to 1982, opened last week.

Contrary to what was said in the minutes of the opening of the investigation, Benedict's private secretary considered him "barely credible". Meanwhile today in a statement to the Catholic News Agency was also his secretary, Archbishop Georg Gänsëein, who said the mistake "was not made with malicious intent" but was "the result of an error in the editorial editing of his statement" for the independent investigation commissioned by the Archdiocese of Munich-Freising ”.

He is "very sorry" about this and apologizes, Gänsëein said.

Benedict, now 94, became the first pope in centuries to resign in 2013, accompanied by several other scandals, the most recent of which failed to prevent and punish the sexual abuse of four children by a priest.
