The EU suspends the visa agreement with Russia
The EU has suspended the visa agreement with Russia. The news was given by the chief diplomat of the European Union, Josep Borrell. Now Russians will find it more difficult to secure a visa and the process will be more expensive.
"We have agreed on the complete suspension of the visa facilitation agreement between the EU and Russia. This decision will affect the reduction of the number of new visas issued by EU member states. The process will be more difficult, it will be longer", he said in a press conference at the end of the two-day meeting with the EU Foreign Ministers in Prague.
Diplomats have said that EU ministers have failed to agree on a total ban on tourist visas for Russians, as member states are divided on the issue.
Borrell said that there has been a significant increase in the number of border crossings from Russia to neighboring countries since mid-July.
"This has increased the security risk for these neighboring states", he added.
