The American basketball player is sentenced to 9 years in prison in Russia after being caught with 1 gram of cannabis oil
An American basketball player, Brittney Griner, has been sentenced by a Russian court to 9 years in prison and a fine of 1 million rubles (approximately $16,400) after 1 gram of cannabis oil was found in her suitcase.
Griner was found guilty of drug smuggling, a crime the judge said she committed intentionally. Griner was arrested at Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport on February 17.
She said it was an honest mistake due to the rush of packing.
Her attorneys argued that Griner only used medical marijuana when she was at home in Arizona, where it is legal.
President Biden reacted to this event by calling the decision unacceptable.
