Barcelona imposes cruise tax on tourists

Tourists aboard cruise ships to Barcelona will soon have to pay a tax to help curb pollution in the Spanish city.

The Catalan government - the transferred authority that governs Barcelona - has not yet announced how much the new tax will cost visitors.

Barcelona is not the only European city hoping to curb the environmental impact of cruise ships.

In 2021, Venice banned major cruise ships. From next year, the Italian travel hotspot is also planning to charge visitors € 10 for admission.

Barcelona is the busiest cruise port in Europe.

In 2019, about 3 million passengers landed in the city, with the number of daily cruise visitors exceeding 10,000 for 139 days a year.

Traffic fell by 90 percent in 2020, but increased to 521,000 in 2021. In 2022, it is projected to grow again.
