Nor does North Korea escape Covid. The first official cases enter

North Korea has ordered a total national blockade after confirming the first official cases with Covid-19. State media have reported an explosion of the Omicron variant in the capital, Pyongyang, but have not stated the number of cases.

Leader Kim Jong-un vowed to extinguish the blast, which he called a 'grave national emergency'.

However observers believe the virus has long been present in the country. The biggest problem seems to be the lack of vaccination. North Korea has refused to vaccinate its population.

North Korea has turned down offers from the international community to supply millions of Chinese-made AstraZeneca and Sinovac last year.

North Korea's main strategy to fight Covid has been to close its external borders since January 2020. But it has also stopped essential supplies from entering the country, which has led to food shortages and a declining economy.
