America faces a catastrophic teacher shortage

The US is facing a catastrophic teacher shortage, and school officials are scrambling to ensure there will be enough teachers for the new school year, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

Due to staff shortages, rural schools in Texas are switching to four-day weeks this fall, and veterans with no teaching experience in Florida are being asked to step into classrooms, according to a report.

"I've never seen it this bad," Dan Domenech, executive director of the Association of School Superintendents, said of the teacher shortage.

It is difficult to estimate how many classrooms in the US are short of teachers for the 2022-2023 school year, the report said.
