27 migrants lose their lives from boat capsize in French port city
27 people died on Wednesday as a result of the overturning of a boat with migrants, which was trying to reach the UK, near Calais, French media report.
Around 14:00, a fisherman reported the discovery of several bodies swimming in Calais, AFP learned from the Interior Ministry.
Following the serious incident, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin will visit the scene. On his Twitter account, he expressed "strong emotion in the face of this tragedy."
The Canal and North Sea Maritime Prefecture said a rescue operation is underway to find other people who may still be at sea, some of whom have already been found.
An air and naval equipment was deployed with two helicopters, a French Navy patrol boat, a coastal naval surveillance boat and a lifeboat.
