Kurti-Macron meeting in Paris: Kosovo and Serbia to find a compromise

The meeting between the President of France, Emmanuel Macron and the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, started in Paris, France on Wednesday evening (June 23).

In a press conference before the meeting, President Macron called on Kosovo and Serbia to engage as Europeans in finding a compromise "that will enable Belgrade and Pristina to return to a European future". .

"This is Kosovo's interest, " Macron said.

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron has been personally involved in accelerating the process of reaching an agreement between Kosovo and Serbia but also other processes in the Western Balkans.

Organized by him and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Berlin summit was held on April 29, 2019. But little success was achieved after the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia was interrupted due to a tax imposed by Kosovo on Serbian goods.

On April 1, in a letter sent by French President Macron to Prime Minister Kurti, he said he hoped the dialogue would continue in order to reach "a comprehensive, final and legally binding agreement, which is one of the conditions for the European rapprochement of Kosovo, as well as Serbia ”.

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vuiqi., Met for the first time on 15 June in Brussels, as part of the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.

Kurti had proposed the signing of a peace agreement, where Kosovo and Serbia would pledge not to attack each other, and called for mutual recognition.

Meanwhile, Vucic had raised the issue of forming the Association of Serb-majority municipalities in Kosovo.

However, the parties did not agree on the issues raised.

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, at a meeting of EU foreign ministers on Monday (June 21st), said that in the first meeting between Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic , they agreed only on the need to continue the dialogue.

Jehona Lushaku-Sadriu, a professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Prishtina, considers that the Government of Kosovo continues to be unclear about its attitudes and approach to dialogue with Serbia. According to her, the attitudes of the executive continue to clash with the attitudes of Kosovo's partner and allied countries in the face of dialogue and its results.
