My city is being bombed, but my mom who lives in Russia does not trust me
Alexandra and her four dogs have been sheltered in the toilet of her house in Kharkiv since the beginning of the bombing.
"When I heard the first explosions, I ran out of the house to pick up my dogs and put them inside. People were in panic, abandoning their cars. "I was very scared," she said.
The 25-year-old has spoken regularly on the phone with her mother, who lives in Moscow. But in these conversations, even after sending her videos from her heavily bombed homeland, Oleksandra is unable to convince her mother of the danger she is in.
"I did not want to scare my parents at first, but then I bluntly told them that civilians and children were dying," she said.
"But even though they are worried about me, they still say that it is probably a coincidence and that the Russian army would never target civilians. "It is the Ukrainians who are killing their own people."
It is common for Ukrainians to have families across the border in Russia. But for some, like Alexandra, their Russian relatives have an opposite understanding of this war.
Oleksandra says that her mother simply repeats what she hears on TV channels, state, Russian.
"I was really scared when my mother quoted the Russian television exactly. They are just brainwashing people. "And people trust them."
Some Russians have taken to the streets to protest the war - but these demonstrations do not appear on major state television channels.
Russia's war in Ukraine, for Russian television, is another story.
