The Cambridge professor who couldn't read or write until he was 18 due to autism
Jason Arday was diagnosed with autism and by the age of 11 he could not even speak. After he started talking, he couldn't write or read until he was 18 years old.
He is now 37 and a professor at Cambridge University.
"This is what I wanted to do", he says today.
Born and raised in Clapham, south-west London, Jason questioned the world around him, although he could not speak.
"I remember thinking if I don't make it as a professional footballer or snooker player, then I want to save the world."
He takes up his new role in March and Professor Arday, a sociologist, has a special interest in improving the representation of ethnic minorities in higher education.
"If we want to make education more inclusive, the best tools we have are solidarity, understanding and love." He knows he can say that more than anyone else.
