My vaccinated parents are behaving as if Covid is gone

It was impossible to hide the shock on my face when I got them in Zoom and both my parents greeted me from the neighbors. Yes, they were inside their house celebrating the neighbor's 75th birthday.

While the garden of our house is next to the neighbors, they could very well have enjoyed each of their own backyard. Just like they drank coffee during the first isolation.

When I blushed and asked if they knew we were in the middle of a fight, my mother reminded me that they had given the first dose of the vaccine and were protected. Neighbors had received a dose of the vaccine as well.

So it looked more like a holiday after vaccination.

What should I tell him? That we had not yet received the second dose? That even if they took the second again there could be a risk, that the vaccine does not protect you 100%. Or that despite these virus mutations emerging, it is never known.

They know all of the above because they watch the news all day.

I am not alone in this concern. I have some friends who are just as worried about their parents being no longer protected as they were last year. Maybe they are tired. That year passed. But I also can not justify them. I also have friends who have lost one or both parents to the coronavirus. I would not like to be one of them.

At least they force us to keep staying home. We young people did the same last year for them. Now that the vaccine has come out and we young people still have to wait to do it, the elderly have to put up with it a little more. May they be my parents too.
