Won the lottery 14 times using simple mathematical calculations, the unusual

In the 1990s, Romanian-Australian economist Stefan Mandel and his small team became part of lotteries and won consistently. Of course this was not achieved by having a really lucky set of numbers. Mandel had a system, which he first used to win a lottery in Romania.

He then used the money to bribe officials and travel first to Europe, then to Australia. The chances of winning a lottery are usually very small. For example, the chance of winning the EuroMillions jackpot with just 1 ticket purchased is 1 in 139,838,160.

Even if you thought you'd double your chances by buying another ticket, you'd still only have a 2 in 139,838,160 chance. However assuming you can buy more of those combinations, you will eventually reach a point where the odds are 139,838,160 to 139,838,160.

But instead of a mathematical problem, you are facing a logistical problem: buying 139,838,160 tickets, but not winning the jackpot. Mandel noticed that in some lotteries the grand prize was more than 3 times the purchase cost of every possible combination.

Assuming you can buy any number combination, you're almost guaranteed a return on your investment (assuming some regular players don't win with the same numbers). Mandel decided to do just that.

Although not against the official rules, such an act was not exactly in the spirit of the game. The problems, although no longer mathematical, were still not small. He first had to convince enough investors to buy into the scheme, which he accomplished over several years.

Then, he had to find a way to buy every possible combination in whatever lottery they would enter. Considering they could enter millions of different combinations, this required him to create algorithms to generate and then print the tickets (which few lotteries allowed at the time).

Although he was investigated by the FBI and CIA, he was found not guilty of any wrongdoing. In total, Mandel won 14 different lotteries, amassing millions of dollars for himself and his investors, before retiring to a luxury home on the tropical islands of Vanuatu.
