Scientists find a 'tunnel' on the Moon

Scientists have found a tunnel under the surface of the Moon.

The study could help space agencies as they plan to return to the moon — and perhaps even stay there for long periods of time. Caves can be an important way to protect astronauts from the extreme environment on the lunar surface.

The major discovery appears to confirm years of speculation about caves that may lie beneath the moon's surface.

The data was actually collected in 2010 as part of NASA's ongoing Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, or LRO, mission. But years later, researchers reanalyzed that data with new signal processing techniques - and found that it suggested the existence of a "subsurface cavity".

"This research demonstrates how lunar radar data can be used in innovative ways to address fundamental questions for science and exploration, and how important it is to continue to collect remote lunar data," said Wes Patterson, of the Laboratory. of Applied Physics Johns Hopkins.
