Lionel Messi sets a historical record, wins the golden ball for the seventh time
Lionel Messi has set a historic record as he won a seventh Golden Ball after receiving the prestigious individual award at a ceremony in Paris.
The 34-year-old has now won the Golden Ball in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019 and 2021, which means he has lifted the trophy of the best footballer in the world more times than any other male player in story, two more than Cristiano Ronaldo.
Messi defeated Robert Lewandowski, who finished in second place, and Chelsea midfielder Jorghino, who finished third in the poll.
As for Cristiano Ronaldo, there will be no sixth Golden Ball for him tonight, as the Portuguese striker finished in sixth place in the standings!
