According to one study the eyes are the key to true biological age
The eyes are the "mirror of the soul," as the poets say, but they also tell a lot about health.

Dry eyes can be a sign of rheumatoid arthritis. High cholesterol levels can cause a white, gray or blue ring to form around the colored part of your eye, called the iris. A copper gold ring surrounding the iris is a major sign of Wilson disease, a rare genetic disorder that causes copper to accumulate in the brain, liver and other organs, slowly poisoning the body.

Not only that, damage to the blood vessels in the back of the eye, called the retina, can be an early sign of nerve damage due to diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, and even cancer, like and glaucoma and age

Checking for signs of disease is the main reason why ophthalmologists check the eyes to see in depth how often you go to visit.

Soon, there may be another good reason to pay a visit. A new study, which researchers say is the first of its kind, says the retina may be able to provide us with an easy way to determine the true biological age of our body, which may reflect age our chronological.

"The retina provides a unique, accessible 'window' to assess the underlying pathological processes of systemic vascular and neurological diseases associated with an increased risk of mortality," wrote study author Dr. Mingguang He, a professor of ophthalmic epidemiology at the University of Melbourne.

The study, published Tuesday in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, analyzes over 130,000 retinal images from samples provided by participants at BioBank UK, a long-term government study with over 500,000 participants between the ages of 40 and 69.

There are two groups of diseases for which the model failed to predict an increased risk of death: cardiovascular disease and cancer. This may be due to a smaller number of such cases in the study population, the researchers said, or to improvements in treatments for cancer and heart disease.
