This is the 'worst food ingredient for your immune system', especially

One question that surprised people at the beginning of the pandemic was: Why does diabetes make it harder to fight a respiratory virus?

First, we know that the SARS-CoV-2 virus can worsen blood sugar control in the short term and can potentially lead people with diabetes to a very dangerous blood sugar condition, studies show. It does this by binding to receptors found in pancreatic beta cells, which produce insulin.

As an allergist and immunologist, I often tell my patients that having diabetes means that you are in a chronic low-grade inflammatory condition, which affects the body's innate immune system and makes the pathogen jump slower when they enter the body.

When it comes to our immune system, what we eat is very important. And no ingredient is more harmful to your immune health than sugar, especially during Covid.

Sugar: The worst food ingredient for your immune system

When you have high blood sugar - which is caused by many factors, but the biggest one is its excessive consumption in the diet - begins a vicious cycle of insulin resistance and obesity that stimulates inflammatory cytokines, damages blood vessels and activates the system immune to repair those areas.

But even if you do not regularly eat donuts, candy, cakes or biscuits, having lots of simple carbohydrates in bread, pasta, rice, cereals or even some fruits and juices can quietly raise your blood sugar.

People often forget - or do not realize - that sugar is found in ketchup, salad dressings and lattes, as well as in juices, nuts, cereals and proteins.
