Victories over AIDS, lessons for Covid-19

The situation caused by the Covid pandemic 19, has diverted everyone’s attention from another global disaster such as AIDS. It has been 40 years since the first reports of this disease since 1981.

This year's World AIDS Day, December 1, marks tremendous progress and the need to further combat such a disease. HIV was the leading cause of AIDS in 1983-1984. A few years later, blood tests were done to understand the diagnosis and to check how the donated blood supply was working.

These revealed the great extent of the pandemic; between 1984 and 1985, new cases of AIDS in the United States almost doubled. Taking the sequence of the virus genome and understanding how it destroyed the immune system and how the disease progressed - paved the way for dozens of approved therapies, which have yielded positive effects.

In 1985, a 25-year-old in the United States diagnosed with AIDS had a life expectancy of less than two years. Today, a person with HIV has a longer life expectancy, for other reasons. Since the global peak of AIDS in 2004, deaths have dropped by 64%. Overall, about 73% of people with HIV receive treatment.

However, according to a study in 2020, almost 700,000 people died of AIDS-related diseases and 38 million people were diagnosed with HIV.

Victories over AIDS, lessons for Covid-19

A safe and effective vaccine for HIV has been elusive so far, but even a moderately effective vaccine can end AIDS as a major health concern. One possibility is that this AIDS vaccine builds on some of the tools and platforms used for COVID-19 vaccines, including the RNA sent and the optimization of immunogens to stimulate the most effective immune response.

Entering the fifth decade of AIDS, the challenge for researchers is to work with communities at risk to provide treatment for all the people in the world who need them.
